FULTON, Mo. - Westminster earned the doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne on Senior Day, capped off by a walk-off grand slam from senior Mason Price to earn the win in game two.
In between games, Westminster honored its four seniors Nick Bohlmann, Adam Mundle, Mason Price, and Blake Strebler.
The Blue Jays improve to 17-13 overall and 12-7 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, moving back into second place in the West Division.
Game one resulted in a pitcher's duel between the two teams, ending with a 2-1 in favor of Westminster. The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double from Ryan Clavin to score Bohlmann, going up 1-0.
A solo home run from the Griffins in the second tied the game at 1-1, but both teams went scoreless until Westminster added the game-winner in the sixth on a single from Brandon Beeler to score Price.
Ian Cassidy pitched all seven innings, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out six. Cassidy improves to 6-2 on the year.
Game two was full of drama, with Westminster taking the win on a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth from Price.
After three scoreless innings from both teams, Westminster finally got on the board in the fourth after Rob Shifrin advanced to home on a balk.
The Blue Jays kept the lead in the fifth on a solo shot from Price to go up 2-0. Zach Stiles kept the rally going with a single to left field, scoring Ryan Clavin and going up 3-0.
Westminster took a 4-0 in the sixth on another Bohlmann RBI single to score Shifrin.
The Griffins went on the offensive in the seventh inning, putting up seven runs including a grand slam to go up 7-4.
Westminster earned two runs back in the bottom of the seventh on another RBI single from Beeler and a pinch-hit RBI single from Zach Eisenreich, cutting the lead to 7-6 with two innings remaining.
Fontbonne added an insurance run in the right, making the score 8-6 in favor of the Griffins.
The Blue Jay comeback started in the eighth inning, on two RBI singles from Strebler and Clavin to tie the game at eight runs apiece. A key error from Fontbonne allowed the go-ahead run, Clavin, to score, making the score 9-8 in favor of Westminster going into the last inning.
The Griffins managed to score twice to go up 10-9 in the top of the inning, giving Westminster once last chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth.
After Eisenreich and Shifrin recorded the first two outs, Westminster sent up back-to-back-to-back-to-back seniors with two outs.
Adam Mundle was the first up, battling for a walk to put a runner on base.
Nick Bohlmann battled to two strikes but also drew a walk.
Strebler stepped up to the plate, also drawing a walk to load the bases for Price.
Down to the last strike for the third time in the game, Price hit a no-doubter over the left-field wall for the walk-off grand slam, with all four seniors recording the final four winning runs for Westminster, making the final score 13-10.
Clavin earned the win in relief after pitching 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, with one earned. Alex Dickneite earned the start, pitching 6.2 innings and giving up six runs on five hits, and one earned, striking out seven.
Westminster looks for the series sweep against Fontbonne Sunday at 1 p.m.
