04/02/2025 Fulton, MO- Men's wrestler Austen Wetzel has been named Westminster College's March Player of the Month for his outstanding performance and leadership both on and off the mat. A key member of the wrestling team, Austen's hard work and determination this month have been pivotal in his success. The Columbia, Missouri native, majoring in Business Communication, has demonstrated exceptional athleticism and character throughout the season.
Austen's achievements this month were highlighted by his qualification for the NCAA Wrestling Tournament Championships. Not only did he overcome previous losses to a tough opponent to secure his spot at nationals, but he also excelled at the tournament, making it to the quarterfinals and taking down higher-ranked opponents along the way. This strong performance reflects Austen's growth as a wrestler and his ability to rise to the occasion in high-pressure situations.
When asked about his Player of the Month honor, Austen humbly responded, "Winning Player of the Month means that I've put in the work on and off the mat. A key from this month was beating a kid to make it to nationals that I lost to twice earlier in the year, and also making it to the quarterfinals at nationals. It's about the effort and the teamwork that got me here."
Austen's leadership extends beyond his wrestling skills. A peer nominated him for this recognition, praising his remarkable season and the positive influence he has on others. "I'd like to nominate Austen Wetzel for Player of the Month. Austen had an amazing wrestling season and specifically stood out this month as he qualified for the NCAA wrestling tournament championships. Not only that, but he performed well by taking down higher-ranked opponents. Outside of athletics, I've seen Austen interact with others in a positive manner and you can tell he's a true leader both in his sport and around campus."
Off the mat, Austen is dedicated to his personal growth and gives back to the community. He spends his time teaching kids how to wrestle and is always looking for ways to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
Reflecting on his time with the team, Austen shared, "My favorite part about being on the wrestling team is that we're all a family. We all treat each other as a family." This sense of camaraderie is what motivates him to continue working hard, not just for his own success but for the success of his teammates as well.
