JACKSONVILLE, Ill. –The Westminster baseball team split a doubleheader with Eureka on Sunday, winning the first game 6-5 and dropping the second game 5-2.

The Blue Jays are now 2-4 overall and 2-1 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

In the first game, the Blue Jays scored five runs in the second inning to take an early lead. They added another run in the sixth to make the score 6-0. The Red Devils threatened late with four runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth, but the Blue Jays were able to hold them off in the ninth to win 6-5.

Branden Beeler went 2-4 in the contest with three RBI.

Mason Kirkweg had a strong outing on the mound for Westminster to collect his first win of the season. The sophomore right-hander struck out eight Red Devils over 5.2 innings while giving up just a pair of hits.

Westminster opened the second game with back-to-back singles from Bryce McKinnon and Beeler. After both runners advanced on a groundout by Ryan Clavin, McKinnon scored on a wild pitch to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead. They then went up 2-0 when Beeler scored on a Will Stonecipher groundout.

The Red Devils got a run back in the second before tying the game in the fourth. They then took the lead by scoring two runs off three hits in the sixth and adding another run in the seventh while keeping the Blue Jays off the scoreboard to avoid the series sweep.

Stonecipher led the Blue Jays with three hits in the game and the team's lone RBI.

Josh Weaver took the loss for the Blue Jays, allowing five runs and seven hits.

Up next the Blue Jays will play a doubleheader on Tuesday against Nebraska Wesleyan at Jerry Robertson Field in Topeka, Kan.
