Blue Jays Back In The Win Column After 81-54 Victory Over The Golden Eagles

1/6/2024 Fulton, Mo- The Westminster College women's basketball team hosted the Spalding University Golden Eagles in a Saturday afternoon SLIAC matchup. The Blue Jays would win the game 81-54 and snap a three-game losing streak. With the win, Westminster improved to 5-8 on the season and 3-3 in the conference. Spalding falls to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the SLIAC.  

The Golden Eagles would bring the fight to the Blue Jays in the early goings, going up 7-4 and extending their lead to 13-6. The Blue Jays would cut the lead to two points by the end of the quarter trailing 15-13 heading into the second quarter.  

Westminster would get a stop and then come down to tie the game after a layup from senior Avylina Powell-Qualo to bring the score to 15 all. Chloe Akerson would bang home a three-pointer to give the Blue Jays their first lead of the game, 18-17. Westminster would score nine unanswered points to grow their lead to 24-17. Powell-Qualo would make the lead ten points with a minute left before halftime, the Golden Eagles scored with thirty seconds remaining. The Blue Jays would have two shots before the buzzer but couldn't get one to fall as they headed to the locker room leading 33-25.  

The Blue Jay offense would explode in the second half, scoring 26 points in the third quarter and 22 points in the fourth quarter that led to an 81-54 win over Spalding. 

Annette Ramirez led the Blue Jays with a game-high 25 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Chloe Akerson had a career-high 15 points, went 5-9 from the field, made 3 three-pointers, and was 2-2 from the free throw line. Avylina Powell-Qualo had 13 points, 3 rebounds, a block, and a steal. Tristan Porter was the 4th Blue Jay to score in double figures as she had 10 points coming off the bench.  

The Blue Jays will return on Tuesday, January 9th when they travel to Elsah, Illinois to take on Principia College. The game will start at 5:30 pm.
