Blue Jays Defeat Panthers As Ramirez Hits Career Milestone

Fulton, Mo 12/6/2023- The Westminster College women's basketball team resumed conference play on Wednesday night as they welcomed the Greenville University Panthers to the Historic Gym. The Blue Jays would lead from start to finish, winning the game 66-56. Junior guard Annette Ramirez scored her 1000th career point during the game. She is the 12th Blue Jay in program history to reach that career milestone. Westminster improves to 3-5 on the season and 1-2 in the SLIAC. Greenville falls to 4-4 on the season and goes to 1-1 in the SLIAC. 

The Blue Jays got off to a hot start, going on a 10-0 run to start the game. They would end the first quarter with a 20-8 lead. The Panthers would battle to get back into it, but Westminster had an answer to every Panther comeback attempt and would take a 36-23 lead into the intermission. 

Greenville would rally in the third quarter; they would go on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to ten points with 3:06 remaining in the quarter. The Panthers would hit a shot to end the quarter to make it 50-42 heading into the last quarter. 

The Blue Jays would get their lead back up to ten points and would win the game 66-56. Westminster forced Greenville to turn the ball over 23 times, which led to 17 fastbreak points for the Blue Jays. The Panthers would out-rebound the Blue Jays 48-37. 

Annette Ramirez, who had a game-high 17 points led Westminster, she also had a game-high 6 steals. Avylina Powell-Qualo had a double-double, scoring 15 points and hauling 11 rebounds. Tristian Porter was the third Blue Jay in double figures, scoring 10 points. She would make two 3s and went 4-4 from the free throw line. 

The Blue Jays will return on Saturday, December 9th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois to take on Blackburn College. That game will tip off at 1:00 pm.
