Blue Jays Win 10th In A Row While Supporting Local Charity

Fulton, Mo 2/15/2024- The Westminster College women's basketball team hosted the annual Super Sam Game and welcomed Lyon College to the Historic Gym on Thursday night. The Blue Jays welcomed Ezra, the 8-year-old son of Daniel & Sara Schaefer of Fulton, who is currently fighting rhabdomyosarcoma. Despite battling a relentless form of cancer, his spirit remains unbroken, and his infectious positivity serves as an inspiration to all those around him. The Super Sam Foundation received a donation from Westminster College to aid them in their battle against childhood cancer, and Ezra received a basketball signed by all the Blue Jay men's basketball players and coaches.

After the pre-game ceremony, it was business as usual for Coach Talisha Washington and her squad. They would come out and blitz the Scots, putting up 33 points in the first quarter, 22 points in the second, 26 in the third and 21 in the fourth quarter to win the game 102-92. With the win, the Blue Jays position themselves nicely in 2nd place in the conference standings. They improved to 15-9 on the season and 13-4 in the conference. The Scots fall to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in the SLIAC.

Their stars Annette Ramirez and Avylina Powell-Qualo, who both set career highs, led the Blue Jays. Ramirez had 38 points, which puts her 2nd all-time in points in a game. She would go 15-20 from the field, one field goal away from tying the school record of 16 field goals made in one game. Powell-Qualo would have 29 points as the two of them combined for 67 of the Blue Jays 102 points. Powell-Qualo also recorded her 4th double-double of the season, grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior Caragan Lockard would also have 11 points and 5 rebounds as she continues to play well for the Jays.

Westminster will be back in action on Saturday, February 17th when they host the Mississippi University for Women on senior day. The game will tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
