Webster Wins First Place Battle, Blue Jays Fall 2-1

The Westminster women's soccer team lost to Webster University on Tuesday evening in the battle to remain in first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). Heading into the night's game, both teams were 4-0, but a late goal by Webster gave them the Gorloks the 2-1 advantage as the buzzer went off. The Westminster Blue Jays' winning streak was snapped, bringing them to 6-5-1 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. They are now in second place in the SLIAC while Webster remains at the top.

The Blue Jays got on the board early in the game as freshman Courtney Whitlock assisted freshman Gracie Koonce's goal in the 20th minute. They rattled off two more shots in the first half, but were unable to connect on them. Webster took three shots including one on-goal, but were unsuccessful.

In the 75th minute, Webster connected with the net to tie the game at 1-1. Webster took four shots-on-goal in the next 12 minutes, and with just 1:45 left in the game, they found the goal again to take the 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Morgan Henry took a shot-on-goal with 48 seconds to go, but Webster's goalkeeper was there to make the save. The Blue Jays were unable to get another shot off, ending the game with the 2-1 loss.

Westminster was outshot 16-4 during the game. They had three shots-on-goal with one goal scored.

Junior goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey (6-5-1) faced nine shots-on-goal and recorded seven saves.

The Blue Jays look to bounce back with their sixth conference game at Blackburn College on Saturday, October 17, at 3:00 pm.
