Second Half Goals Doom Blue Jays In Road Loss

Elsah, IL, 10/12/21 – The Westminster College men's soccer team travelled to Illinois to take on the Principia College Panthers on Tuesday night.  They ran into a determined Panther team on their home field during their homecoming week. The Panthers would turn a 1-1 halftime tie into a 4-1 loss for the Blue Jays. The Loss dropped the Blue Jays to 3-8-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the SLIAC.  The Panthers improve to 2-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the SLIAC.

Principia struck first in the first half to take a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.  The Blue Jays would get into the action in the 43rd minute when Barrett Smith (Columbia, MO / Rock Bridge) would find Mustekbel Shoune (Columbia, MO / Rock Bridge) for the game tying goal to make it 1-1 at the half.

The second half would be all Principia as they would score three unanswered goals to win the game 4-1.
The Panthers and the Blue Jays would each record ten shots but the Panthers would have the advantage in shots on goal 7-2.  The Blue Jays would have the edge on corner kicks 8-0.  Westminster was whistled for 12 fouls compared to Principia's nine.  Freshman Toby Hughes (Jefferson City, MO / Jefferson City) made his second start in goal for the Jays and he went the distance.  He faced 7 shots on goal and made three saves.

The Blue Jays will return home on Saturday evening to take on the Fontbonne University Griffins in a crucial SLIAC matchup.  The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. kick off.
