Westminster Women's Soccer Overcomes Big Blue

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster women's soccer defeated Millikin to close out the nonconference season on a high note.

The Blue Jays improve to 4-2-1 with the win.

"We have been playing really well regardless of our last outcome, and today was no different," said Westminster Head Coach Wendy Sanchez. "Our backline was extremely organized as well as our midfield. We managed to stay composed and attacked when we needed to."

Westminster struck early on a goal from Kate Ponder, scoring in the fourth minute on a header. Heidi Gundy chased the ball down inside the box for the cross to earn the assist.

"Kate stepped it up and set the tone from the beginning and Natalie (Schulte) was amazing for us tonight," said Sanchez.

It didn't take the Blue Jays long to go up two goals in the 12th minute with Natalie Schulte's first goal of the night, which included an assist from Gracie Koonce

Less than two minutes later, Heidi Gundy added yet another goal for Westminster, with the cross from Schulte.

The Blue Jays went the final 30 minutes of the half scoreless but went into halftime with a three-goal lead.

Millikin scored their lone goal in the 69th minute after Westminster fouled the Big Blue in the box, giving Millikin a penalty kick to score the goal.

Schulte had the answer in the 84th minute, closing out the scoring for either team with her second goal of the game on a breakaway, taking the goalie one-on-one and coming out with a goal.

Sarah Cradick played all 90 minutes in goal to tally her fourth win of the year, making six saves.

"Overall, the determination to win after giving up a goal in the second half was there until the end of the match," said Sanchez. "It was great to see that the team didn't let up."

Westminster opens St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at Spalding.
