Blue Jays Head To 3rd Place Match at SLIAC Tournament After 1-1 Day

The Westminster women's tennis team advance to the third place match of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament after going 1-1 on the first day. The Westminster Blue Jays won the first match over the day with a 5-0 decision over Fontbonne University. They then faced Webster University to decide who went to the championship game, but Webster won 5-0.

The Blue Jays will now face #3 Greenville College to battle it out for third place in the tournament.

The Blue Jays won the five necessary points to end the match with Fontbonne in singles play. They finished the first win of the day with seven 6-0 set sweeps with two coming from each sophomore Laura Kelly in the number three spot, sophomore Ellen Woolsey in the number four spot and junior Grace Sanford in the number six spot. Senior Jessica Klutts grabbed the seventh 6-0 sweep in her second set in the number one spot. She won the first set 6-2. In the fifth spot, junior Laura Wiltshire defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1.  Freshman Payton Beeler won her first set 6-2 and was winning 3-2 before the final point needed was won.

With the first win of the day, the Blue Jays were paired with the number one team in the conference, Webster University. Doubles play was first, and Webster swept the Blue Jays 3-0. In singles play, Klutts and Beeler finished first with three 6-0 losses and one 6-1 loss. 

The Blue Jays play Greenville on Saturday, April 18, at 10:00 a.m. at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
