Westminster Tops MacMurray 12-2 in Opening Round of SLIAC Tournament

The Westminster baseball team topped MacMurray College in the opening round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament, 12-2. The Blue Jays move to 26-12 on the season and will now move to the second round of the tournament. 

Sophomore Adam Mundle broke the Westminster season record for runs scored during the win and now holds 48.

MacMurray scored their two runs in the bottom of the first inning off two sacrifice flys. 

Sophomore Nick Bohlmann led-off the fifth inning with his fourth triple of the season, tying the season triples record. He was brought home with junior Tanner Branneky's RBI single. Senior Connor Hager then hit a RBI double to bring in Ta. Branneky to even the score at 2-2. Senior Nolan Bax singled to first base to score Hager, closing out the inning with the Blue Jays holding a 3-2 lead.

The Blue Jays put up six runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 lead. Ta. Branneky hit a solo home run. A sacrifice bunt from Bax brought in sophomore Blake Strebler, and a two run single from Mundle extended the lead to 7-2. The final two runs came from a MacMurray error.

RBI singles from Bax and senior Tyler Branneky in the seventh inning gave the Blue Jays an 11-2 advantage, and they scored the 12th run in the ninth inning with a RBI ground out by senior Deion Hughes to score Mundle. 

The Blue Jays out-hit MacMurray 16-8 with seven batters with multiple hits. Ta. Branneky led the team as he went 3-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Bax recorded three RBI.

Senior Collin Brinker (9-2) grabbed the win on the mound with seven innings pitched. He struck out two and allowed just two runs. Senior Justin Riggins closed out the game, pitching the final two innings.

The Blue Jays will face the winner of the Webster/Greenville game on Friday, May 13 at 5:00 pm in Greenville, Ill.
