Men's Tennis Defeats STLCOP, Shuts Out Fontbonne

The Westminster men's tennis team went 2-0 on the day with wins over St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) and Fontbonne. The Westminster Blue Jays started the day with an 8-1 win over STLCOP, followed by a 9-0 shutout over Fontbonne. They are now 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.

The Blue Jays swept STLCOP in doubles play. The no. one doubles team, sophomore Adam Fuchs and senior Kyle Collins, and the no. three doubles team, sophomore Grant Peterson and freshman Jacques Erasmus, won with the score of 8-4. In the no. two doubles spot, sophomore Pete Hasenmueller and junior Reese Hicks, won 8-3.

In singles play, the Blue Jays won the no. 1-5 spots. Fuchs won in the no. one singles spot, 6-1, 6-4. Collins won in the two spot, 6-0 and 6-4, and Hasenmueller (no. three spot) finished with the scores 6-0, 6-3. Hicks won in the no. four spot, 7-6, 6-4, and Peterson won the final point in the no. five singles spot, 6-3, 6-3.

The Blue Jays went on to shut out Fontbonne, ending their conference season with a 2-2 record. They took a 3-0 lead after doubles play as the Fuchs, Collins duo shut out their opponent, 8-0. The no. three duo, Peterson and Erasmus, lost just one set to win 8-1, and the no. two duo, Hasenmueller and Hicks, won 8-3.

In singles play, Fuchs in the no. one spot went into a tiebreaker after winning the first set, 6-3. He lost the second, 6-0, but came from behind to win the tiebreaker, 10-8. Collins (no. 2), Hasenmueller (no. 3), and Erasmus (no. 6) all won with the final score 6-0, 6-1. Hicks won 6-2, 6-2 in the no. four spot, and Peterson shut out his opponent in the no. five spot, 6-0, 6-0. 

The Blue Jays close out their regular season with an away match versus Missouri Valley College on Tuesday, April 19, at 4:00 pm.
