Clermont, FL, 3/26/2022 – The Westminster College softball team was looking for a bounce back game in their second game of the day on Saturday against the St. Olaf Oles. The Blue Jays were down 4-0 early in the game but came back to tie the game at 4-4 after four innings. The Oles would break the tie in the bottom of the fifth and despite a few opportunities for the Blue Jays would hold on to win 5-4. The loss drops the Blue Jays to 2-8 on the season.
The Oles would strike for two runs in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Blue Jays would respond in the top of the third inning. Abbey Jaspering (Wright City, Mo. / Wright City) reached on an error by the Oles second baseman to start things off for the Jays. Eva Gannon (Wentzville, Mo. / Holt) would then single down the left field line moving Jaspering to second. Emily Esquivel (San Diego, Ca. / Eastlake) would then single up the middle to load the bases. Laney Rosson (Columbia, MO / Battle) would continue her good spring break with an RBI single to score Jaspering to cut the Oles lead to 4-1. Raigan Mckee (Oologah, OK / Oologah) would then lift a sacrifice fly to center field to score Janae Shirk (Springfield, Mo. / Pleasant Hope) who had pinch ran for Gannon to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Blue Jays got to work again in the top of the fourth inning with two outs. Kelsey Logan (Fulton, Mo / South Callaway) would start the two-out rally with a single to right field. Jaspering would walk sending Logan to second. Jaspering and Logan would move up to second and third on a wild pitch. They would then both score when Gannon reached on a fielding error by the Oles shortstop to tie the game at 4-4.
The Oles would take the lead back on an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. The Blue Jays would have runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings but just couldn't come through with the big hit.
Kendall Weber (Lake Saint Louis, MO / Liberty) pitched a solid game for the Blue Jays giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked five and struck out one in taking the tough luck loss. It was Webber's (0-1) first outing on the mound this season.
The Blue Jays will be back in action on Sunday as they play their final two games in The Spring Games. They will take on the Williams College Ephs at 8:30 a.m. CDT and then will play Tufts University at 10:45 a.m.
