St. Louis, Mo. 4/10/2022- The Westminster softball team traveled to St. Louis on Saturday for a SLIAC doubleheader against the Webster University Gorloks. The Gorloks ruled the day, holding the Blue Jays offense to two hits in game one, winning that one 8-0 and then defeated the Blue Jays 10-2 in-game number 2. The Gorloks improved to 4-2 in conference play and 8-9 overall. The Blue Jays fall to 2-4 in conference play and 4-14 overall.
Game One: Box Score
Erin Carr (Woodlawn, Il / Christ Our Rock Lutheran) got the start in game one. She would pitch two innings and surrender four walks. She also gave up five runs on four hits. Bailee Zemianek (Wentzville, MO / Holt) came to pitch in relief in the bottom of the third inning. She pitched three and two-thirds innings; struck out four batters and gave up three runs on eight hits.
The Gorloks would score two runs in the second, four runs in the third, one run in the fourth, and the last run in the sixth to win the game 8-0.
Raigan Mckee (Oologah, OK / Oologah) got the Blue Jays' first hit in the top of the first inning with a single to right field. They would go hitless until the fifth inning when Kasey Ginder (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) hit a single to left field.
Game Two: Box Score
The Blue Jays rattled the bats in between games and looked to rebound back in game two.
Emily Esquivel (San Diego, Ca. / Eastlake) got the game started with a lead-off walk. Laney Rosson (Columbia, Mo. / Battle) then would single to left field. McKee reached on a fielder's choice; Esquivel would be out at third on the force out. Then the Jays would hit into an inning-ending double play.
Haley Miller (O'Fallon, MO / Liberty) got the start in this one and would pitch four innings and third. She would strike out two batters and walked one. She would also give up nine runs, eight earned on nine hits.
She got off to a rough start, hitting the first batter she faced and walking the third one after getting a ground out. The Gorloks would hit a single to left field to score the first two runs of the game. Miller would get a little pitcher fielding practice on a ball hit back to her. She would make the play and get the runner out at first. The Gorloks would hit another single to right field with runners on second and third. The hit would score another run, putting them up 3-0. Miller would get out of the inning by getting a ground out to the second base.
The Blue Jays would threaten the Gorloks at the top of the second after Zemianek singled to center field. She would also steal second. Tatum Bradshaw (Winfield, MO / Winfield) would draw a walk, and Zemianek advanced to third on a passed ball. Bradshaw would also steal second. The Blue Jays could not capitalize and left the runners on base.
The Gorloks would score a run in the bottom of the second to go up 4-0.
The Blue Jays would once again find themselves with a scoring opportunity in the top of the third after Esquivel reached on an error and would wind up on second base after an errant throw by the Gorlok third baseman. Rosson would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to move Esquivel up to third base. Raegen Dickinson (Ozark, MO / Ozark) got a hit to right and scored Esquivel, giving the Blue Jays their first run of the day. Ginder would lie down a bunt single to put runners on second and first. Kayleigh Fike (Eldon, Mo. / Eldon) came in to pinch run for Dickinson. Zemianek kept the two-out rally going with a single to right field, scoring Fink and moving Ginder up to third. Kelsey Logan (Fulton, Mo / South Callaway) would draw a walk to load the bases. Bradshaw would pop out to second base and leave the bases loaded.
The Blue Jay would go 1-2-3 in the fourth.
Mckee started the fifth with a bang, hitting a double to right field. She would advance to third on a groundout by Dickinson. Ginder would fly out to left field, but the Gorloks got the ball in quickly to hold the runner at third. Zemianek would be walked to put runners in the corners with two outs for Logan. She would strike out looking, leaving two runners on base.
The Gorloks would put a big six-run fifth inning to put the game away 10-2.
Zemianek led the Blue Jays' offense going two for two with an RBI. The trio of Mckee, Dickinson, and Ginder would go a combined three for nine. With Dickinson having an RBI. Rosson would also go one for two.
The Blue Jays are back in action on April 13th when they travel to Greenville University to take on the Panthers in a road doubleheader. Those games are scheduled for 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
