Five Score 12+ Points in 95-90 Win Over Greenville

The Westminster men's basketball team had five players score 12 points or more in their 95-90 win over Greenville College on Saturday afternoon. The Westminster Blue Jays have won two consecutive conference games to leave them with a perfect 2-0 conference record and a 2-2 overall record.

The Blue Jays got on the board just four seconds into the game with a jumper from senior Kellen Brondel, and a jump shot by freshman Carter Wands and a layup by sophomore Romo Tabb put the Blue Jays up by four just three minutes into the game, 12-8. Later in the half, Greenville hit a six-point run to take a one-point lead, 17-16, with 12:13 remaining. They took the lead again with 10:21 to play, but Westminster finally secured the lead with a jump shot by senior Matt Murphy. Greenville knotted up the game twice, but the Blue Jays pulled ahead by seven with 58 seconds to play in the first half. The Panthers hit a three-pointer to send the game into halftime with Westminster leading by three, 48-45.

A three-pointer by senior Brandon Drum put the Blue Jays back up by seven two minutes into the second half, but Greenville chipped away at the lead and tied the game five minutes in, 55-55. The Blue Jays managed a 10-1 run over the next two minutes to take a nine-point lead, 65-56. The Blue Jays brought their lead into double-digits with a jump shot and an "and one" from junior Zach Nelson with just under seven minutes to play. They maintained a 10+ point lead over the next five minutes, but with 1:34 to go, Greenville cut the lead to single digits, 91-82.

Greenville brought the game within five with a steal and a good three-pointer, but sophomore Tanner Cochran drained both free throws to take a seven-point lead with 35 seconds on the clock. Greenville added one more bucket to their points, but the Blue Jays held the ball in the final seconds to run out the time and win the game 95-90.  

The Blue Jays shot 51.9 percent from the field. Wands and Cochran each recorded 15 points in the win while Nelson posted 14 points. Wands shot 70 percent from the field and led the floor with nine rebounds. Cochran went 9-13 from the free throw line. Nelson went 5-for-7 from the field and recorded five assists in the win. Tabb and Brondel added 12 points to the win.

The Blue Jays take a pause from conference play as they travel to Pella, Iowa on Tuesday, December 8, to play Central College (Iowa) at 7:00 pm.
