Softball Sweeps Stephens, 4-2 and 3-0

The Westminster softball team swept Stephens College in their home opening doubleheader. The Westminster Blue Jays won the first game 4-2 and went on to win the second game 3-0. The wins bring the Blue Jays to 3-3 on the season.

Game One

Stephens scored an early run in the top ofthe first inning, but junior Erica Burney led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run over the right field fence to tie the game. The Blue Jays went on to add a second run with a junior Brittany Hodge sacrifice bunt to score junior Anne Baker.

The Blue Jays added two more runs in the third inning with a RBI single from Burney to score sophomore Amber Tepen and a sophomore Kat Cooper run off a passed ball.

Stephens added one more run in the bottom of the seventh with a groundout RBI, but junior pitcher Alyson Hahn struck out the final batter to end the game.

The Blue Jays finished with four hits. Burney went 3-for-3 from the plate with a double and a home run. 

Hahn (1-2) was credited with the complete game win. She pitched seven innings and struck out six. 

 

Game Two

The Blue Jays started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a single RBI from Tepen to score freshman Caty Barrett. Freshman Kaylin Calton scored on the next play as Tepen stole to second and Calton went home. The third and final run of the game came from a Hodge RBI single to right field, bringing in junior Alyssa Johnson

The Blue Jays out-hit Stephens 8-2. Barrett and Tepen each went 2-for-3 from the plate and four others finished with one hit each. 

Senior Shannon Perrigo (2-0) pitched the complete game win. She faced 26 batters and allowed just two hits.

 

 

The Blue Jays return to the field on Sunday, March 13, with a home doubleheader versus the University of Wisconsin-Platteville starting at 1:00 pm.
