The Westminster softball team swept Spalding University during Sunday's Senior Day. The Westminster Blue Jays and the Spalding Golden Eagles took game one into 10 innings before the Blue Jays pulled out a 5-4 win. The team went on to win game two, 8-2, bringing their conference record to 9-5. They are now 16-15 on the season with four games on the schedule.
Game One
Senior Shannon Perrigo started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two RBI single to center field, bringing in sophomore Leah Holthaus and junior Erica Burney.
Spalding scored a run in the third and a run in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, junior Alyssa Johnson hit a solo home run over center field to take a 3-2 lead, but in the top of the seventh, Spalding hit a RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
The Blue Jays were unable to score in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Spalding scored a run off a Westminster error, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-3 advantage, but sophomore Amber Tepen hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to score Holthaus and tie the game at 4-4. An out at home ended the inning with the game still tied, sending it into the ninth.
Both teams were scoreless in the ninth, bringing the game into the 10th inning. The Blue Jays held Spalding to three quick outs, and in the bottom of the 10th with two runners on base, Tepen hit a RBI single to score junior Brittany Hodge and win the game, 5-4.
The Blue Jays recorded 10 hits throughout the 10 inning game. Burney went 3-for-4 from the plate, and Perrigo and Johnson each grabbed two hits.
Junior Alyson Hahn (8-6) recorded the complete game win in the circle. She pitched 10 innings, faced 43 batters and struck out eight.
Game Two
The Blue Jays put up two runs in the bottom of the first with a RBI double from Tepen and a RBI single from Burney.
Tepen brought in two more runs in the second inning with a two RBI double, scoring junior Anne Baker and Holthaus.
In the top of the fourth, Spalding scored off a RBI single to bring the game to 4-1.
The Blue Jays doubled their score in the fifth inning to take an 8-1 advantage over the Golden Eagles. On the second at-bat, Tepen hit a two-run shot over the center field fence, bringing in Baker on the play. Sophomore Kim Morrison hit a ground out RBI to score sophomore Kat Cooper, and junior Madison McKindley hit a RBI single down the left field line to bring home Johnson.
Spalding hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to put the score at 8-2, but the Blue Jays held Spalding from scoring again in the seventh, ending the game with a win.
The Blue Jays out-hit Spalding, 14-8. Tepen went 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run and two doubles, and Burney and Johnson each went 2-for-3 from the plate.
Perrigo (8-6) pitched the complete game win in the circle. She struck out seven of the 29 batters faced while throwing just 77 pitches.
The Blue Jays host Blackburn College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26, starting at 5:00 pm.
