The Westminster softball team swept Webster University in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5. The Westminster Blue Jays won game one 7-5 before going on to win game two 11-4. The two wins bring them to 9-12 on the season and to 2-2 in conference play.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Jays had three batters walked to load the bases with one out and sophomore Leah Holthaus up to bat. Holthaus hit a RBI single, bringing in freshman Caty Barrett to take a 1-0 lead, but a double play on the next at bat ended the inning with two batters left on base.
In the bottom of the second, Webster led-off with a home run to tie the game. They added two more runs on a double in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
It was not until the sixth inning that the Blue Jays were able to score agian. With two outs and one runner on second, freshman Maddie Coffin hit a RBI double to score junior Alyssa Johnson. Holthaus then came back in to run for Coffin and was brought home by junior Anne Baker's RBI single. Sophomore Amber Tepen singled, bringing junior Erica Burney to the plate with two runners on. Burney smashed a three-run home run, taking a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Webster scored two runs to bring the game within one, 6-5, but in the top of the seventh, Johnson scored on a RBI single by junior Brittany Hodge to take a 7-5 lead.
The Blue Jays held Webster to just one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game with a 7-5 win.
The Blue Jay offense finished with nine hits. Hodge went 2-for-2 from the plate with a double, a sacrifice hit and one RBI. Burney went 2-for-4 from the plate with a home run and three RBI.
Junior Alyson Hahn (4-4) grabbed the complete game win in the circle. She pitched seven innings and struck out five.
Game Two
Westminster scored three runs in the top of the first inning to start the game with an early 3-0 lead. Sophomore Amber Tepen hit a RBI single to bring in Holthaus, and Burney then hit a double, putting both runners in scoring position for senior Shannon Perrigo. Perrigo hit a two RBI single, bringing in Burney and Tepen.
Hahn scored an unearned run in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead, but Webster scored a unearned run in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the third, Perrigo hit a RBI single to score Tepen, giving the Blue Jays a 5-1 lead.
In the fifth, Burney hit her second home run of the day, and freshman Caty Barrett added another run off Hahn's RBI single to go up 7-1. In the sixth, Burney hit a sacrifice fly out, scoring Holthaus, and Perrigo hit her third RBI single of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Webster scored three runs to bring the game to 9-4.
In the top of the seventh, Baker hit a two RBI single to bring in sophomores Kat Cooper and Amelia Knipfel. The Blue Jays held Webster to just one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game with an 11-4 win.
The Blue Jay offense recorded 14 hits. Burney went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double. She also recorded two RBI and scored two runs. Perrigo went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Perrigo (5-5) grabbed the complete game win in the circle. She pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters while allowing just one earned run.
The Blue Jays travel to MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois for a two-game series on Saturday, April 9. First pitch is at 1:00 pm.
