Fulton, Mo., April 18, 2021 – The Blue Jays baseball team came into Sundays double header against the Fontbonne University Griffins looking to get back on the right side of the win loss column. They would turn to senior Andrew Boessen to take the ball in game one. He rewarded the Blue Jays with a 7-inning complete game shutout and a 2-0 game one win. The Griffins would come back in the nightcap to take game two 4-1. The Blue Jays record is now 10-13 overall and 7-9 in the SLIAC.
Game 3 BOXSCORE
The third game in the series was well played by both sides like the rest of the games in the series. The Blue Jays would take the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Hayden Hirschvogel would single to left field with two outs. Hirschvogel would then steal second base. Bryce McKinnon would then draw a walk. Parker Schnieders would then come through for the Blue Jays with an RBI single to right field to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Jays would add another run in the bottom of the 4th inning when with one out senior Derek Shikles would hit a no doubter home run over the left field wall to make the score 2-0.
From there the Blue Jays would turn to another senior Boessen to bring the Jays through to victory. He would do just that. He would go the distance while only allowing 4 hits while striking out 6 and walking none. He only allowed to runners to reach second base all game and in the 7th and final inning he sat the Griffins down in order to finish his complete game shutout.
Game 4 BOXSCORE
The Blue Jays would look to try to split the weekend series with a win in game 4. The Griffins had other ideas. After the game was scoreless into the 4th inning the Griffins would strike first on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Their lead would grow in the top of the 5th inning via a home run, a balk and an error would make it 4-0.
The Blue Jays would get on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning. Hirschvogel would lead off the inning with a single to left field. Logan Thompson would walk and Tanner Nowatzki would pinch run for him. McKinnon would also walk to load the bases. Parker Schnieders would drive home a run with a ground ball to shortstop who forced McKinnon at second and Hirschvogel scored. Nowatzki would move to third. Ben Parks would fly out to center field but not deep enough for Nowatzki to tag. The Griffins would get out of the inning without further damage.
The Blue Jays would make things interesting in the bottom of the 9th inning as they would load the bases with two outs but couldn't get a run across and dropped the game 4-1.
Trent Morrow (1-1) worked 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2 in picking up the loss. Junior Jayme Bertish would throw 3 strong innings in relief keeping the Jays in it. He allowed no runs on one hit while walking one and striking out one.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Wednesday April 21st as they will travel to Topeka, Ks. To play a neutral site game against Nebraska Wesleyan University. The game is set for a 11:30 a.m. first pitch and is scheduled for just one 9 inning game to be played.
