Clayton, Mo., May 14, 2021 - The Westminster College Blue Jays took on the regular season SLIAC Champions and top seeded Webster University Gorloks. The Gorloks did what they have done all year long and dispatched the Blue Jays 9-2. The Loss drops the Jays to 18-20 on the year and drops them into the play back game of this weekend's tournament. They will take on Greenville University at 7:30 p.m. in O'Fallon, Mo. at Car Shield Field. This will be an elimination game with the winner advancing to the pod championship against Webster University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. also at Car Shield Field. The loser of tonight's game will be eliminated and end their season.
The Gorloks jumped on the Blue Jays early. They built a 9-0 lead through six innings. The Blue Jays would finally get on the board in the top of the seventh inning. With one out Hayden Hirschvogel would reach base on a throwing error by the third baseman. Hunter Mulholland would then ground a single between first and second. Parker Schnieders doubled down the left field line to drive in Hirschvogel for the first run of the game for the Blue Jays. The next batter Bryce McKinnon lined a single to right field to drive home Mulholland to cut the Gorlok lead to 9-2. Unfortunately, those were the only runs that the Blue Jays could muster.
Freshman pitcher Chase Holder (1-5) started and went four and two thirds innings. He gave up nine runs, on 13 hits. He walked two and struck out no one in picking up the loss. Junior reliever Jayme Bertish came in and did an outstanding job saving the rest of the pitching staff. He would go three and a third innings yielding no runs on four hits while striking out two and walking none.
Schnieders led the Blue Jays at the dish where he went 2-4 with an RBI. Senior Derek Shikles also went 2-4 for the Jays.
The Blue Jays will have precious little time to regroup, but regroup they must. The Blue Jays will have the season on the line in their next game later tonight at 7:30 p.m. against Greenville University. This will be the sixth game in seven days for the Blue Jays against the Panthers. The Blue Jays have won four of the previous five games between the two teams.
