Fulton, Mo., May 13, 2021 - The Westminster College Blue Jay Baseball team begins play in the SLIAC Postseason Conference Tournament.  The Blue Jays finished the regular season 17-19 overall and 13-15 in SLIAC play to earn the #4 seed in the tournament. Their opponent is a familiar one. The #5 seeded Greenville University Panthers and the Blue Jays just finished up a four-game series at Greenville this past Monday.  The Blue Jays took three out of four from the Panthers on their home field. Thursday evening it will be nine innings at Car Shield Field in O'Fallon, Mo. for the right to advance to the championship semifinal round on Friday at 1:30 p.m. or a loss would put the Blue Jays into the losers bracket at 10:00 a.m.  No matter what game the Jays play in on Friday it will occur at Clayton High School.

Taking a look at the Westminster College Blue Jays (17-19, 13-15 SLIAC):

  • The Blue Jays earned the 4th seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
  • Last time out the Blue Jays split in a double header at Greenville University this past Monday against the Panthers winning 3-2 in a thrilling game one win and then losing 9-7 in game two.
  • The leading hitters for the Blue Jays are Derek Shikles who is batting .307 with 4 home runs and a team leading 27 RBI's and Payton Whitehead who is hitting .303 with 4 home runs and 25 RBI's.  Blue Jay lead-off man Steven Diaz is hitting .277 but leads the regular starters in on base percentage at .399.  Hunter Mulholland is batting .265 with 26 RBI's.
  • The man on fire right now for the Blue Jays is first baseman Logan Thompson who has gotten the opportunity to be the every day first baseman the last six games. He has taken advantage of his opportunity as he is hitting .369 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI's.
  • Steven Diaz leads the team with five home runs.  Derek Shikles, Mulholland, Parker Schnieders and Whitehead are next with four home runs each.
  • Diaz leads the team with nine stolen bases. Coltin Green has six thefts.
  • Freshman Dawson Koch leads the Blue Jay pitching staff in wins as he is 4-4 in 9 appearances with a 6.70 ERA in 43.0 innings with 34 walks and 38 strikeouts.
  • Senior Andrew Boessen leads the relief corps with 3 saves. He is also a converted starter here of late and he leads all the starters with a 2.23 ERA and three complete game.  He has a remarkable 44 strikeouts and just seven walks in 48.1 innings pitched.
  • Freshman Bode Gebbink leads the relief corps with a 2.13 ERA in 21 innings of work.
  • The Blue Jays are hitting .268 as a team with a .354 on base percentage.  The Jays have scored 197 runs in 36 games. The Blue Jays have 32 home runs.

Taking a look at the Greenville University Panthers (9-28, 9-19 SLIAC):

  • The Panthers are seeded 5th in the SLIAC Tournament.
  • The Panthers leading hitters are Landon Mokris who is hitting .359 with 4 home runs, 33 RBI's and an on base percentage of .430.  Drew Fry is batting .301 with 13 RBI's.
  • Frey leads the team with 14 stolen bases.  Tanner Gerdes has 13 stolen bases.
  • Jaxon Gipson leads the Panthers on the mound going 2-6 pitching 60.2 innings while striking out 33 and walking 23 with a 4.30 ERA.  Luke Fleener leads the team in wins with a 3-6 record and a 7.63 ERA in 48.1 innings pitched in 10 starts.
  • Greenville as a team is hitting .239 with 10 home runs and an on base percentage of .338.  In 37 games the Panthers have scored 180 runs.
