8/31/2024 Fulton, MO- On August 30, 2024, after a three-hour storm delay, Westminster College faced a tough battle in their home opener at Kent & Judith Mueller Stadium, ultimately falling 2-1 to Nebraska Wesleyan. Despite equalizing early in the second half, the Blue Jays couldn't hold off the Prairie Wolves, who secured the win with a decisive goal shortly after.

Zachary McClanathan's goal in the 43rd minute gave Nebraska Wesleyan the advantage right before halftime. The Blue Jays came out firing in the second half, quickly leveling the score by senior forward Tigran Topchain in the 48th minute, assisted by junior midfielder, Niklas Olsson. However, the visitors regained the lead six minutes later when Jaden Hayes found the back of the net. The Blue Jays pressed for an equalizer, but Nebraska Wesleyan held on for the win despite finishing the match with ten men after Hayes received a red card in the 87th minute.

The Blue Jays showcased resilience and determination, particularly in the second half, where they outshot Nebraska Wesleyan 6-4. Westminster's defense held strong against a physical Prairie Wolves attack, but missed opportunities in front of goal ultimately cost them the game. The Blue Jays also won the battle of corner kicks in the first half, earning four to Nebraska Wesleyan's three, but could not capitalize on their chances.

Topchain, led the charge for Westminster, netting the Blue Jays' only goal of the match and consistently testing the opposing defense. Niklas Olsson was pivotal in the midfield, providing the assist on Topchain's goal and working tirelessly throughout the game. Goalkeeper Toby Hughes also made five crucial saves to keep the Blue Jays within striking distance.

The loss drops the Blue Jays to 0-1-0 on the season, but the team remains optimistic as they prepare for their next match on Monday, September 2nd at Central (Iowa) at 2:00pm.
