LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Westminster softball fell twice to Spalding in the regular season St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finale.
The Blue Jays fall to 13-7 overall and 13-5 in the SLIAC with the two losses.
"We had a couple of good individual performances but we left too many runners on and had too many errors," said Westminster Head Coach Sara Stafford. "We need to improve those things and we'll come out on top."
In game one, the Golden Eagles took and early 2-0 lead after one inning, but Westminster regained a run on a Katie Price solo home run to centerfield.
The next five runs of the game came from Spalding, making the score 7-1 after four innings. A rally from the Blue Jays in the fifth inning put Westminster back in the game on an RBI single from Mikala Guthrie and a two-run shot from Madison Washington to score Guthrie. Despite the bats going in the fifth, Spalding played shutdown defense over the final two innings to earn the win in game one.
Madison Ingram took the loss on the mound, giving up three runs on six hits.
In game two, Westminster took the hot start and went up 1-0 in the second with a home run from Mackenzie Myers to left field.
Taylor White added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Bailee Zemianek. The Eagles answered with a run in the fourth and sixth to send the game into the final inning tied at two runs apiece.
After White doubled to center, Hannah Schroeder hit a home run to straight centerfield, giving Westminster the 4-2 lead and Spalding just three more outs.
Spalding opened the inning with a single and a Blue Jay error, and another Spalding single drove in a run to cut the lead to one run. The Eagles added another run on an overthrown ball, and the final walk-off run came on an RBI hit to make the final score 5-4.
Price took the loss, pitching six innings and giving up five runs, three earned, on nine hits.
Westminster returns home to face Quincy in its final regular season contest before turning their sights to the SLIAC Tournament, hosted by the Blue Jays May 2-4.
