Clayton, Mo., March 13th, 2021 – The Westminster College Blue Jays women's soccer team waited a very long time to step onto the pitch. One year, four months and a couple weeks give or take a day or two in between games. The Fontbonne University Griffins had the advantage of this being their third game of the season. The Griffins would use that experience to go on to take a 2-0 victory.
The Griffins would get on the scoreboard 21:49 into the game when Fontbonne's Krystal Kohenskey took a shot on goal that Blue Jay keeper Megan Davidson made the save on but she couldn't coral the ball and Fontbonne's Kierstyn Weaver was able to put the rebound away for a 1-0 Griffin lead.
The second goal would come in the second half at the 50:43 mark when Alexndria Smith took a ball from Kohenskey off the free kick and scored for the 2-0 lead.
The Blue Jays would have several good scoring chances in the match. One of those came at the 38:56 mark when Blue Jay Forward Elsen Witte found herself with the ball in front of the net but her shot would find the Fontbonne keepers hands. The Blue Jays had another good scoring chance that came at the 55:28 mark when Blue Jay midfielder Kelsey Gordon ripped a shot that hit the crossbar.
The Griffins would outshoot the Blue Jays 12-8 on the day. The Blue Jays would get three corners to two for the Griffins.
Davidson, in her first collegiate game in goal, faced seven shots and made five saves.
Head Coach Wendy Sanchez had this to say about her teams first game, "We had our opportunities to score and we had our moments that we picked it up. However, we didn't make the most of our 90 minutes. We will learn from today, get better and be ready for our next match up."
The Blue Jays will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they will play their home opener against the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers. Kick off is set for 5:00 p.m.
