Westminster Volleyball Defeats Spalding

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Westminster volleyball team defeated Spalding in three sets on Saturday. The Blue Jays dropped their second match of the day to Webster 3-1. The Blue Jays are now 6-6 on the season and 4-1 in SLIAC play.

The Blue Jays dominated the first match of the day sweeping Spalding in three sets. Ashley Kistaitis led all players with 14 kills. Erica Schrader and Eryka Wanyonyi each recorded 14 digs to lead the Blue Jays. Wanyonyi and Natalie Needy each had a pair of services aces in the match. Westminster had a .242 hitting percentage as a team.

Westminster took on Webster in the second match of the day. The Blue Jays opened the match with a 25-14 victory in the first set. The Gorloks battled back to win the next set 25-19 and tie the match at 1-1. The two teams played very competitively over the next two sets but Webster narrowly defeated Westminster 25-23 and 28-26 to win the match 3-1.

Kistaitis, Wanyonyi and Teresa Becker recorded double-doubles for Westminster. Kistaitis recorded 15 kills and 12 digs and Wanyonyi registered 11 kills and 23 digs. Becker recorded a game-high 31 assists and added 25 digs. Schrader was the third Blue Jay to record over 20 digs in the match and finished with 24. The Blue Jays totaled 108 digs in the contest.

The Blue Jays play next on Thursday Oct. 3 at home against Webster at 7 p.m.
