Blue Jays Fall To SLIAC Leaders 3-0

Fulton, MO, 10/20/21 – The Westminster College Blue Jays went up against the SLIAC leading Greenville University Panthers on Wednesday night in Historic Gym.  Despite being tied late in each of the first two sets, the Blue Jays would be beaten in straight sets by the Panthers 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 15-25) The loss drops the Westminster record to 10-14 overall and 6-2 in the SLIAC.  Greenville improves to 18-6 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the SLIAC. 

The Blue Jays were led by Eryka Wanyonyi (Columbia, MO / Hickman) with eight kills.  Claire Whitehouse (St. Louis, MO / Parkway Central) led the team hitting.273. Senior setter Gretchen Durbala (Burlington, IA / Burlington) recorded a team high 23 assists to pace the Blue Jays.  Her eighth assist on the night gave Durbala 2,000 career assists.  She accomplished this in one season with now closed MacMurray College and the last two seasons with the Blue Jays.  Erica Schrader (Imperial, MO / St. Pius X) led the Blue Jays defense with eight digs. 

The Blue Jays will next welcome the Spalding University Golden Eagles to Historic Gym for a big game as the Blue Jays look to stay ahead of the Golden Eagles in a race for a SLIAC Conference Tournament first round bye.  The match is set for a 2:00 p.m. first serve.
