Inaugural Showdown: Blue Jays Battle Owls

09/22/2024 Fulton, MO- For the first time ever, Westminster College's football team faced William Woods University at the Kent and Judith Mueller Stadium on Saturday evening. Westminster fought hard but ultimately came up short against William Woods, finishing with a final score of 50-35. 

The first quarter started with William Woods quickly taking the lead on an 18-yard touchdown pass. Westminster responded with a solid drive, resulting in a 6-yard touchdown reception for Payton Olsson from quarterback Keegan Zdybel, closing the gap to 7-6. However, a 75-yard extra point return shifted momentum back to the Owls.  

In the second quarter, Westminster's offense continued to push forward. Zdybel with a 6-yard rushing touchdown that brought the score to 15-13. The Blue Jays' defense, although challenged, held strong at times, but a critical interception return for a touchdown extended William Woods' lead to 30-13. Hugo Jover capped off the half with a 21-yard field goal, leaving Westminster trailing 30-16 at halftime. 

As the third quarter began, Westminster came out eager for a comeback. Zdybel connected with Trace Helsel for a 14-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the score to 30-23. This moment energized the Blue Jays and the home crowd, as they appeared to shift the momentum in their favor. However, William Woods responded with a 14-yard touchdown pushing their lead to 37-23. 

In the fourth quarter, Westminster continued to fight back. Zdybel added an 18-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 37-29 and keeping hopes alive for a comeback. Yet, the Owls answered back with a 54-yard touchdown run extending their lead to 44-29. William Woods capped their scoring with a quick 17-yard touchdown reception making it 50-29. 

Westminster managed to add another touchdown late in the game, as Aden Campbell caught a 26-yard pass from Zdybel, finalizing the score at 50-35 

Westminster's defense, led by Alex Goly with nine tackles, worked hard to contain the Owls' offense. Despite giving up some big plays, the unit showed moments of improvement that they can build on. 

With strong performances from players like Olsson, who caught a touchdown pass, and Aden Campbell, who added another receiving touchdown, the Blue Jays proved they have the talent to compete. Zdybel finished the game with 159 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns, demonstrating his potential as a key player for Westminster. 

The Blue Jays will play at home again on October 5th to take on Greenville University at 1:00PM.
