09/28/2024 Carlinville, IL- The Westminster College women's soccer team opened their conference play with an impressive performance on Saturday afternoon, dominating Blackburn College with a 10-0 win in Carlinville, Illinois.
The Blue Jays set the tone early in the first half. Just four minutes into the game, Savannah Feltrop opened the scoring. Three minutes later, forward Claire Sanders doubled the lead. The Blue Jays continued adding to the score when freshman forward Eastin Colyer found the back of the net in the 16th minute, giving Westminster a comfortable 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half showcased Westminster's relentless attack as they added seven more goals to their tally. In the 47th minute, Faith Coates scored her first goal of the season. Coates then assisted in the 59th minute, setting up freshman forward Molly Angell for her third goal of the season. Sanders struck again in the 65th minute, assisted by junior defender Kaitlyn Halamicek, bringing the score to 6-0.
Just a minute later, in the 66th minute, Angell recorded her second goal of the match. The momentum continued as freshman Brooke Yanskey scored twice, first in the 75th minute and again in the 82nd minute, increasing her season total to three goals. Freshman Stasha Deters added to the tally with a goal in the 80th minute, her second of the season, bringing the final score to an impressive 10-0.
Goalkeeper Kendall Chigas earned the shutout without facing a single shot on goal, thanks to a dominant defensive effort that limited the Beavers to zero shots throughout the entire match. Westminster's backline effectively controlled the pace, allowing the team to focus on their offensive strategy.
The Blue Jays outshot the Beavers 34-0 and held a 17-0 advantage in shots on goal. Westminster also earned 16 corner kicks while preventing Blackburn from taking any.
The Blue Jays play again on Tuesday October 1st in a rescheduled preseason game against Simpson College in Indianola, IA at 7:30PM.
