Halamicek Late Game Heroics Put Blue Jays On Top

Fulton, Mo 9/12/2023- The Westminster College women's soccer team picked up their second win of the season in dramatic fashion against Nebraska Wesleyan. The Blue Jays would find themselves down on two separate occasions to the Prairie Wolves, however, they would battle and win the game 3-2 after two goals in the 88th minute. The win improves Westminster's record to 2-2 on the year and Nebraska Wesleyan falls to 1-4.

The Blue Jays would have ten shots in the first half to the Prairie Wolves' five, but the first half would end with the score tied nil-nil. Early in the second half, Westminster would be called for a handball in the box that gave Nebraska Wesleyan a penalty kick. They would capitalize on the chance to go up 1-0 in the game in the 62nd minute.

Less than two minutes later, Paige Sunneberg would tie the game up 1-1 off an assist from Lauren Halamicek. With the game tied once again, both teams would continue to go back and forth. After twenty minutes, disaster would strike for the Blue Jays. In the 83rd minute, the Blue Jays' defense had a miscommunication that led to an own goal by Westminster and put the Prairie Wolves back on top 2-1.

Refusing to let that be the reason they lost the game; the Blue Jays would respond in the 88th minute. Freshman Allie Auer would breakaway down the left sideline and put a cross into the box. The ball would find Sunneberg in the middle, who headed it to Kelsey Cochran, who was all alone on the backside to score the equalizer and tie the game up 2-2.

With less than two minutes left, Lauren Halamicek would score the game-winning goal. She would take a shot from fifteen yards out, placing the ball perfectly over the Prairie Wolves keeper and the crossbar. Westminster would hold on to that lead for the next minute and a half to win the game, 3-2.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Saturday, September 16th when they travel to Iowa to take on the Central College Dutch. The game will start at 1:00 p.m. as per the schedule.
