Fulton, Mo 10/25/2023- The Westminster College women's soccer team held its final regular season home game on Wednesday night against the Fontbonne University Griffins. It would be a battle between two of the top teams in the SLIAC and a rematch of last year's SLIAC Tournament semi-final, that saw the Blue Jays win in penalty kicks. Heading to the matchup this season, the Griffins hold the number two spot, and the Blue Jays are in fourth. There would be fireworks early on, with Fontbonne scoring in the 5th minute and Westminster answering immediately in the 6th minute. The Griffins would score again in the 42nd minute and held on to win the game 2-1. With the loss, the Blue Jays are now 6-7-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in the SLIAC, sharing fourth place with Spalding University. The Griffins improved to 7-6-1 on the season and 7-1 in the SLIAC and are sitting in second place with one game remaining.

The Griffins did not waste any time finding the back of the net, stunning the Blue Jays with a goal in the opening five minutes. Westminster answered right back in the 6th minute when senior Lauren Halamicek scored her fourth goal of the season and tied the game 1-1. Both teams would battle trying to find the go-ahead goal. The Griffins would break through in the 42nd minute and took a 2-1 lead.

Fontbonne would control the ball for much of the game and held the Blue Jay attack to only that one shot. Westminster goalie Megan Davidson had a busy night in the net, making ten saves on the twelve shots she faced.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Friday, October 27th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois to take on the Red Devils in the last game of the regular season. The kick-off is set to happen at 7:00 pm.
