Blue Jays Win in Conference Home-Opener

Fulton, Mo 9/28/2023- The Westminster College volleyball team hosted the Blackburn College Beavers in their first conference home game of the season. The match would go to a fifth set with the Blue Jays walking away victorious 3-2 (25-17,22-25,25-18,21-25,15-9). Westminster improves to 6-7 on the season and remains undefeated in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, 3-0. Blackburn falls to 5-11 and 0-3 in the SLIAC. 

The Blue Jays offense was led by Malena Bixby and Kylie Hasselbacher, who would have over twenty kills each. Bixby had twenty-one kills and fourteen digs for the Jays. At the same time, Hasselbacher had 20 kills and three total blocks in the game. 

Westminster would have twelve aces and thirteen blocks with Hasselbacher getting a solo block. Kirsten Schrader would pick up eighteen digs and Blue Jay setters, Braylee Montgomery and Caitlyn Wheadon, would control the tempo of the game. Montgomery would have twenty-nine assists, one kill, and a block. Wheadon had fourteen assists in the game as well. Westminster was all over the place defensively, executing eighty-one digs as a team. 

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Friday, September 29th when they travel to St. Louis to take on the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy. The game will start at 6:00 PM.
