Blue Jays Split Spalding Tri-Match

Louisville, Ky 10/14/2023- The Westminster College volleyball traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Spalding University tri-match. They would take on the Golden Eagles in the first game of the day and it would go to the wire in the fifth set. The Golden Eagles would narrowly edge out the Blue Jays, winning the fifth set, 15-13, and the match 3-2. Westminster would have to turn right around and face the Eureka College Red Devils. The Blue Jays would sweep the Red Devils 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16). The Blue Jays move to 12-11 overall on the year and 7-4 in the SLIAC.  

Game One vs Spalding: Box Score 

In the first match of the day, the Blue Jays would take on the Spalding Golden Eagles, both teams vying for a fourth place in the SLIAC. The Blue Jays swept the Golden Eagles earlier in the season and looked to repeat that performance. Spalding would have a different idea, coming out and winning set one, 25-19. The Blue Jays responded by winning set two, 25-22. Spalding won set three, 25-22, the Blue Jays would win the fourth set, 25-18, and force a final fifth set. The Blue Jays would jump out to an early 3-1 lead, but the Golden Eagles came back and tied the set, 4-4. The Blue Jays would rip off five straight points and looked like they took control of the set, leading 9-5. The Golden Eagles answered by scoring four straight points of their own and tying the set 9-9. A few moments later, Westminster was on top with a 12-11 lead. Spalding would then score three in a row to take back the lead and go up 14-12. The Blue Jays would get a kill to make it 14-13 but the Golden Eagles would end it on the next point, winning the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.  

The Blue Jays would have two players with double-digit kills, Malena Bixby led the way with thirteen kills, and Kylie Hasselbacher would have twelve kills in the match.  

 

Game Two vs Eureka- Box Score 

The Blue Jays had a quick turnaround, having to take on the Eureka College Red Devils in the next match. Westminster would sweep Eureka 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16). Bixby and Hasselbacher would once again lead the Jays attack, having twelve and eleven kills, respectively. Bixby would record another double-double on the year but also having ten digs in the match.  

The Blue Jays will be back in action next Saturday, October 21st, when they face Principia College and Lyon College in the Principia tri-match. The Blue Jays will face the Scots first at 12:00 p.m.
