Blue Jays Sweep Home Tri-Match 

Fulton, Mo 10/7/2023- The Westminster College volleyball team welcomed the Mississippi University for Women and Eureka College into the Historic Gym for a tri-match on Saturday. The Blue Jays would sweep the Owls 3-0 (25-22,25-21,25-19) in the first game of the day. Then, in the final match, the Blue Jays would sweep the Red Devils 3-0 (25-11,25-13,25-15). Westminster improved to 10-9 overall and 6-2 in the SLIAC. 

 Game One vs MUW: Box Score  

The Blue Jays and the Owls would battle each set, but Westminster would sweep MUW 3-0. MUW would have a 22-21 lead in the first set. Malena Bixby would get a huge kill to give the Blue Jays a 23-22 lead, and Kirsten Schrader would follow that up with a service ace to make it 24-22. MUW would commit an attacking error on the next point to give the Blue Jays the 25-22 set-one win.   

The Owls would have a 17-12 lead in the second set, then the Blue Jays would rip off seven unanswered points to take a 19-17 lead and go on to win the set 25-21. 

MUW would again have a lead in the third set that required a Westminster comeback. The Owls would be up 12-8 in the set until the Jays scored six points in a row to take the lead back at 14-12. MUW would score three points of their own to swing the score back in their favor at 15-14. The Blue Jays would outscore the Owls 11-4 down the stretch to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0. 

Malena Bixby led the Blue Jay attack with twelve kills. Katelynn Jackson would have eight kills, and Kylie Hasselbacher rounded out the Blue Jay offense with seven kills of her own. Braylee Montgomery had twenty-two assists from the setter position. Kirsten Schrader had twenty digs in the match, while Malena Bixby also had thirteen digs, earning her another double-double this year. Game  

Game Two vs Eureka: Box Score 

The Blue Jays showed why they were one of the top teams in the SLIAC as they swept the Red Devils 3-0 and held them to no more than 15 points in a set, winning 25-11,25-13, 25-15. 

Bixby had a team-high of eleven kills and Hasselbacher had eight. Montgomery had twenty-four assists, three aces, and five digs. Caitlyn Wheadon would also contribute thirteen assists, an ace, and three digs. 

 

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Tuesday, October 10th when they host Hannibal-LaGrange. The game will start at 7:00 pm inside the Historic Gym.
