Blue Jays Fall 3-1 To Gorloks

St. Louis, Mo 10/4/2023- The Westminster College volleyball team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri on Wednesday night to take on the Webster University Gorloks. Both teams came into the game with one conference loss and the winner would solidify themselves as a top team in the SLIAC. The Blue Jays would come out and win a close set one, 25-23. The Gorloks would win a close set two, 25-23 and go on to win the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-19 to win the match 3-1. Webster improves to 7-9 overall and 5-1 in the SLIAC. Westminster falls to 8-9 overall and 4-2 in the SLIAC. The Gorloks hold the number two spot in the conference and the Blue Jays fall to fifth.   

Westminster would struggle to hit the ball, committing thirty-two hitting errors and had a .130 % hitting percentage. Malena Bixby recorded her tenth double-double of the season, getting thirteen kills and sixteen digs. Madisyn Ellis recorded nine kills, while Kylie Hasselbacher and Katelynn Jackson contributed eight kills each, highlighting the Blue Jays' well-rounded offense. Kirsten Schrader had eighteen digs, and Braylee Montgomery had fourteen digs and thirty assists. Caitlyn Wheadon would have twelve assists for the Blue Jays.   

Webster would have eleven service aces and had twenty-five blocks. Comparatively, the Blue Jays had five service aces and six blocks. The Gorloks would take advantage of every Blue Jay mistake to go to win three straight sets after dropping set one.   

The Blue Jays will be back in action on October 7th when they host the Westminster Tri-Match. Westminster will play MUW at Noon and Eureka College at 4:00 pm with MUW and Eureka playing each other at 2:00 pm.
