Westminster Men's Basketball Bested by Eureka

FULTON, Mo. – The Westminster men's basketball team was defeated by the Eureka Red Devils on Saturday afternoon 93-74 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Game of the Week.

With the loss the Blue Jays 7-11 overall and 6-6 in the SLIAC while the Red Devils improve to 7-5 in conference play and 12-7 overall.

Eureka opened the game with 6 unanswered points before Jaxon Althaus got the Blue Jays on the board with a layup. Eureka then made a jumper to go up 8-2. Althaus cut the lead to two with four points off a pair of free throws and layup. However, the Red Devils rattled off nine consecutive points before Omar Wright ended the drought with a three and layup to make the score 17-11 with just over 11 minutes left in the half. The Westminster defense could not find a way to stop Eureka and the Red Devils extended their lead to as many as 19 points with 4:30 left in the half and went into halftime holding a 49-33 lead over the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays opened the second half on a 12-3 run to cut the lead down to seven points. A three-pointer by Eureka put the lead back to double digits briefly before a free thrown from Ethan Thompson got the Blue Jays within nine points. The Red Devils started to even further away late in the second half and held on to take the game 93-74.

Wright led the Blue Jays with a career-high 21 points and four steals. Althaus (14 points), Landon Harrison (12 points) and Thompson also reached double-figures for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays will continue SLIAC play on Tuesday night at Principia.
