Grinnell Powers Past Westminster Men's Basketball

GRINNELL, Iowa. – The high-scoring Grinnell offense defeated the Westminster men's basketball team 139-94 on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 1-5 on the season.

Grinnell opened the game on a 7-0 run before Landon Harrison put Westminster on the board with a layup. After the basket, the Pioneers extended their lead to 22-7 before the Blue Jays used a 12-point run to bring the game to 22-19. Grinnell used a layup and a free throw to go up 25-19 before two made free throws from Steph Campbell and a Jaxon Althaus layup brought the Blue Jays within two points of the Pioneers 25-23 with 9:11 left in the half. The Pioneers outscored Westminster 35-20 over the rest of the half to take a 60-43 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers added 79 points in the second half to win the game 139-94. As a team Grinnell made 17 of the 34 three-pointers they took in the half compared to the Blue Jays who shot 6-13 from deep. Harrison, Omar Wright, and Ethan Thompson went contributed 10 points in the second half for Westminster.

Wright was the leading scorer for Westminster with 20 points followed by Thompson with 18. Harrison dished out a team-leading six assists and added 16 points. Steven Brandt led the Blue Jays with nine rebounds in the game. 

Brandt, Jaxon Davis (nine points), Trenton Barbour (seven points) and Campbell (five points, five rebounds) each were key contributors off the bench for Westminster.

Next up the Blue Jays face Greenville on Dec. 4th in their SLIAC opener.
