Fulton, Mo., March 30, 2021 – The Westminster College men's soccer team came into their game with the Principia College Panthers riding on a three-game winning streak. The Panthers were no match for the Blue Jays in the end losing 4-0. The strong play of Freddy Nene was very beneficial to the Blue Jays as he would tally one goal and two assists in the effort. The win improved the Blue Jays record to 4-1-1. They currently sit in third place in the SLIAC standings.
The first half the Blue Jays would spend testing out the Panther Defense. The Blue Jays held possession for the majority of the first half but could not find the back of the net despite a couple of good chances.
In the 13th minute Collin Murray and Philip Udinyiwe had shots inside the box but the Principia defense managed to block both shots.
Principia launched one counter attack in the 32nd minute when Principia's Patrick Sherman would blast a shot from the top of the box that looked like it could sneak in under the crossbar but Blue Jay keeper Chase Vogt leapt high into the air and redirected the shot over the crossbar for the sav. The Blue Jay defense easily cleared the ensuing corner kick to stave off the Panthers and the game would go to half tied 0-0.
It didn't take the Blue Jays very long in the second half to get on the board. The Jays took the opening kickoff of the second half and Philip Udinyiwe guided a great ball to Jordan Kahrhoff who buried the shot to the right of the keeper for a 1-0 Westminster lead. The score came just 18 seconds into the second half.
The next Blue Jay goal would come in the 59th minute when Freddy Nene would score off a nice through ball by Joshua Udinyiwe for a 2-0 lead. Nene wasn't finished as he would assist on the next two Blue Jays goals.
In the 71st minute Patrick Wisnewski took a pass from Nene and scored to give the Jays a commanding lead at 3-0 with barely 19 minutes left. The Blue Jays would cap their day off with a Matthew Schulte goal in the 84th minute of another Nene assist. Westminster would then cruise to the 4-0 victory. The streak continues.
The Blue Jays outshot the Panthers 21-7 and had the advantage in corner kicks 8-5.
Schulte and Wisnewski would lead the Jays in shots taken with four each. Schulte and Kahrhoff would both record two shots on goal each to lead the team.
Chase Vogt faced 5 shots on goal and saved each one on the way to his second shutout in a row.
The Blue Jays will be back in action on Saturday at home against Fontbonne University. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
