Blue Jays Prevail 2-1, Push Winning Streak To Five

FULTON, Mo., March 3, 2021—The Westminster College men's soccer team won its fifth straight contest 2-1 at home against Fontbonne University Saturday night.  The win improves the Blue Jays to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the SLIAC

The game was scoreless up until the 17th minute when a foul was called on Fontbonne in the box. The Blue Jays Patrick Wisnewski stepped up and blasted the penalty-kick past the Fontbonne keeper to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.The rest of the first half went by without any further scoring as Westminster would lead 1-0 at the half. 

The second half would see the Blue Jays expand its lead out to 2-0 on a Sam Heckart goal as he would score in the box on a loose ball.

Fontbonne would not go away as the would trim the deficit down to one. In the 67th minute, the Blue Jays were called for a foul just outside the box. Jared Lyeki of Fontbonne scored on a shot off the free kick just inside the left post to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Griffins would have one final chance in the 85th minute but Jays keeper Chase Vogt would come away with the save securing the one-goal  for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays outshot the Griffins 11-10. The Jays also recorded the games only corner kick.  Wisnewski led Westminster with five shots followed by Matthew Schulte with 3 and Heckart with two.

Vogt would face five shots on goal and make four saves in rout to his fourth win of the season in goal. 

The Blue Jays will return to action on Wednesday on the road at the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers.  The Blue Jays and Tigers played to an intense 1-1 double overtime draw a few weeks ago.  The match is set for a 1:00 p.m. kick off.
