Louisville, Ky., April 17, 2021 – The Westminster College men's soccer team was back in action on the road Saturday afternoon in Kentucky. The Blue Jays took on the Spalding University Golden Eagles in Louisville. The Jays were looking to rebound from a loss last time out. The Golden Eagles had other plans and were able to make two first half goals stand up in a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays record slips to 6-4-1 on the season and 5-4-1 in the SLIAC.
The Blue Jays finished the season 4th place in the SLIAC and have earned the #4 seed in the SLIAC Conference Tournament that starts on Tuesday April 20th. The Blue Jays will host the 5th seeded Greenville University Panthers for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
The Golden Eagles would score in the 23rd minute on a goal by Abdoulaye Pam. Spalding would score again in the 26th minute on a Asher Benge goal to make it 2-0 Spalding.
The Blue Jays would cut the lead in half in the 35th minute when after a Spalding foul the resulting free kick by Barrett Smith found Andrew Sprengel who found the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1 where it would remain at halftime.
The Blue Jays would manage a few shots in the second half but could not get one in the net as the Golden Eagles would do just enough to preserve the 2-1 win.
The Blue Jays outshot the Golden Eagles 9-8 but shots on goal went the way of the Golden Eagles 5-2. Westminster held the advantage on corner kicks 6-2 but could not capitalize on one.
Jays keeper Chase Vogt would face five shots and make three saves.
