Late Free Throws Give MacMurray Win Over Westminster Women's Basketball

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Westminster women's basketball team suffered a 66-64 loss to MacMurray on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays drop to 5-4 in conference play and 6-10 on the season. The Highlanders made a pair of free throws with just two seconds left on the clock

After the first quarter, the Blue Jays held a slight 17-15 lead over the Highlanders. Kallee Dowler scored nine of the Westminster's 17 points after going 3-4 on three-pointers.

The Highlanders tied the game at 17-all with two free throws and went ahead 19-17 with another pair of foul shots before Abbie Reece retied the game with a layup. Dowler then made two free throws to put Westminster back on top and the Blue Jays held the lead until a layup and a free throw gave the lead back to MacMurray. The Blue Jays took the lead back with a 6-0 run thanks to a Reese Arnold trey and a three-point play from Rei Imamura. Arnold extended the lead to seven points with another three-pointer to put the Blue Jays up 36-29 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Blue Jays led by as many as 12 points, but the Highlanders continued to fight and outscored Westminster 17-15 in the quarter to make the score 51-46 Westminster going into the final frame. Abby Nichols scored six points and grabbed three rebounds in the quarter.

The Highlanders used a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to make the score cut the Westminster lead to a single basket 62-60 with 1:26 remaining. Two made free throws by Dowler brought the lead back to four points but MacMurray was able to cut the lead to two points and scored after forcing a turnover to tie the game with 36 seconds left. After a missed Blue Jay jumper, the Highlanders drew a foul with two seconds left on the clock and made both foul shots. Westminster could not score on their final possession and lost 66-64.

Dowler finished with 25 points to lead the Blue Jays followed by Arnold with 13.

The Blue Jays will host Greenville on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
