SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – While energy and effort traveled from Missouri to Ohio with the Westminster Women's Basketball team, ball security did not. The Blue Jays turned over the ball 21 times and allowed 34 points from those turnovers, en route to an 83-64 loss Sunday in the opening round of the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic in Springfield, Ohio. In comparison, Stevenson turned the ball over 18 times but Westminster was only able to make the Mustangs pay for 20 points off those turnovers.

Westminster opened the game with an 11-0 run, but Stevenson battled back to trail by a basket at the end of the first quarter, 20-18. In the second period, the Mustangs outscored Westminster 23-12 to lead 41-32 at intermission. Stevenson never looked back from there, outscoring Westminster 18-15 in the third quarter and 24-17 to cruise to the victory. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Mustangs.

Westminster shot 31 percent from the field (20-63) in the contest, compared to 43 percent (32-75) for Stevenson. The Blue Jays shot a meager 17 percent from 3-point range while the Mustangs shot 27 percent from beyond the arc. Stevenson also had a slight rebounding edge, grabbing 47 boards to 41 for Westminster. The Mustangs' bench outscored Westminster's, 32-26.

Hannah Crist led Stevenson with 23 points; Kellie Johnson added 16.

Abbie Reece held the Blue Jays with 17 points followed by Reese Arnold who scored 14. Abby Nichols and Reece tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight apiece.

Westminster will play against Wilmington on Monday in the tournament's consolation game. The Quakers fell to host team Wittenberg, 85-68 in the tournament's opening contest on Sunday. The game is scheduled for an 11 AM tipoff.
