Schimmel Scores First Goal In "Play For K. Schimmel" Game, Blue Jays Win 2-0

The Westminster women's soccer team hosted a "Play For K. Schimmel" game at Saturday's conference-opener on Saturday, September 26, versus Fontbonne. The Westminster Blue Jays shut out the Fontbonne Griffins, 2-0, to start conference 1-0. They are 3-4-1 on the season.

The "Play For K. Schimmel" game was a celebration of the life of Kathy Schimmel, the late mother of senior Ashley Schimmel. The proceeds from the night are going to the Arkansas State Soccer Association, an association that supports underprivledged youth soccer. Kathy Schimmel worked as the registrar for the association.

As fitting as it could be, Schimmel scored the first goal of the game just 12:20 in. Freshman Courtney Whitlock passed the ball up and Schimmel shot the ball into the top right corner of the goal.

The game remained 1-0 until justWith just over two minutes left in the game, Whitlock scored the second goal of the game. The Fontbonne goalkeeper blocked the cross, and Whitlock turned to shoot the ball into the net.

Junior goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey (3-4-1) was credited with the shutout win in goal. She finished with eight saves and allowed no goals.

The Blue Jays play their second conference game on Saturday, October 3, at Iowa Wesleyan University. Game starts at 3:00 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
