Fulton, MO, 10/16/21 – Blankets were out tonight as the Westminster Blue Jays women's soccer team took on the Fontbonne University Griffins at Blue Jay Field at Kent and Judith Mueller Stadium in frigid temperatures. The Blue Jays came into this game off back to back conference wins and looked to extend that winning streak but failed to succeed falling to the Griffins 4-0. The Blue Jays are now 5-7 overall with a SLIAC record of 5-5.
The Blue Jays defense showed promise in the first half as sophomore goalkeeper Megan Davidson (St. Louis, MO / Affton High School) racked up six saves while only allowing one goal. Fontbonne would eventually score in the 33rd minute despite a strong defensive effort from the Blue Jays but the Griffins would not score for the rest of the half.
Fontbonne would control the ball for the majority of the second half keeping the ball in their offensive third. The Blue Jays defense however, held its own by not allowing any goals for the first 25 minutes of the second half despite having to defend against the Griffins for the majority of the half. The Blue Jays defense would eventually fall late in the game as the Griffins logged three goals in the final 15 minutes of the game. Davidson was able to record six saves in the second half as well while only allowing three goals. Lauren Halamicek (St. Louis, MO / Oakville High School) was able to find some space and got a great look but unfortunately her shot was saved by the Griffins keeper.
Fontbonne outshot Westminster 17-1 overall and 14-1 in shots on goal. Fontbonne took seven corner kicks to Westminster's one. Fontbonne recorded six fouls to Westminsters five. Davidson played all 90 minutes and amassed twelve saves. Halamicek attempted Westminster's only shot for the night.
The Blue Jays will have to rebound on the road against the Greenville University Panthers on Wednesday October 20th. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
