Westminster Athletes Express #whyd3

The Westminster College athletic department is currently celebrating NCAA Division III Week on campus and on social media. Student-athletes were asked to post why they chose Westminster and Division III on social media using the hastags #whyd3 and #myd3. Listed below are the student-athlete social media posts. There is still time; post your #whyd3, #myd3 story on social media to see yours here!

"I don't know where I'd be without my team. Cross Country is by no means an individual sport. Sure, it takes your own time and work, but when it comes down to the mental ability to keep going day after day, race after race, that takes a team. Without their support, reassurance, and readiness to lend a helping hand through any situation, there is no way I would have even crossed the finish line. My team is my rock and its members are my inspiration. I wouldn't change a single second of my college athletic career. #whyd3 because I can't think of a single reason not."

"Because it allows me to play my two favorite sports with my favorite cousin #whyd3"

"Division 3 softball gives me the opportunity at a one of a kind education at an amazing college while still playing a sport that I have loved since I was a little girl. I've built confidence, leadership attributes, and improvement in my athletic ability. I have also learned from amazing teammates and role models while also gaining lasting friendships. #whyd3 #myd3"

"Because I love pulling tarp at 10pm with the only light coming from our cars and because my teammates send pictures like these to the group message to make fun of me. #whyd3 #myd3"

 Amber Tepen, '18

"Because I have teammates that will make a wave for me when I want to go surfing in the winter. #whyd3 #myd3"

 Bailey Mitchell, '17

"The cheerleading program at Westminster College has grown so much the past few years and I am so glad I am here to experience it! I am constantly blown away by the team's integrity to be better than ever. Being at a D3 school allows us to actually know the athletes we are cheering for which makes the games that much better for us. I get to be co-captain with my best friend and lead a hard working  cheerleading squad. I wouldn't have it any other way! #Whyd3"

 Marissa Gossett, '17

"Because I choose to play in an un-air conditioned gym for hours on end with my second family. #whyd3"

 Kayla Reeg, '17

"From football to basketball, from year to year the Westminster College Cheerleading team has shown growth! Growth in numbers as well as growth in our sport! However, helping out at campus events, giving back to the community, and cheering on our fellow athletes makes all the work worth it! Cheering at Westminster over the years has been very rewarding and I am blessed to help lead this team while expanding our program! #whyd3 #myd3 #westminstercollege"

"I wouldn't be who I am today without all of these wonderful people by my side. I'm thankful every day that I chose Westminster College as my home away from home, and that these women are my family. #whyd3 #sliacchampions #sportsmanshipaward"

 Payton Gruber, '17

"We play for no other reason than the love of the game. We play for moments like these. I play for my teammates because they are my family and my best friends and I wouldn't trade it for anything. #whyd3"

 Gabby LaRose, '17

"From winning 3 games freshman year, to senior year winning the SLIAC tournament & getting an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament #whyd3 #ExpectTheUnexpected #WestMo"

 Erin DeVasto, '16

"I chose to go division 3 for a lot of reasons. One being to get the education I always dreamed of. The second was to continue to play the game that I love. The reasons that never crossed my mind for going division 3 are the ones that have meant the most. Division 3 has given me two amazing softball families that I know I'll have for the rest of my life. It's given me endless hours of hard work and sweat and seeing the payoff. It's given me inside jokes, and belly aches from laughing too hard. It's given me a support system that I couldn't get through college without. It's given me coaches and teammates who not only care about how you play, but how you are doing in school and life. Going to a division 3 school has been the best decision I have made. #whyd3 #myd3"

 Brittany Hodge, '17

"Division III has given me way more than the opportunity to continue playing. It's given me countless friends that I can't escape from but I would never want to anyway. #whyd3 #myd3"

 Payton Beeler, '18

"D3 has given me the opportunity to continue to play the game I love while getting an excellent education. I love this team and am so happy I chose D3! #whyd3"

 Anne Baker, '17

"I'm so grateful to get to play with my best friends in the whole world. #whyd3"

 Morgan Henry, '18

"Love being a part of this sassy, frumpy, dysfunctional family. #whyd3 #yeahjays"

 Alyssa Johnson, '17

"We play for the love of the game and love for each other. That's probably why we're so dang good at going to battle together #SLIACchamps #whyd3 #myd3 #d3week"
