Baseball

Baseball competed in their third NCAA Tournament in program history last week. Their trek to the NCAA Championships came to a close early in the NCAA Regionals. They played Wisconsin-Whitewater in the opening round of the tournament, and Whitewater took a 6-1 lead, but three Blue Jay runs in the top of the seventh closed the gap to just two runs, 6-4. Whitewater put up five more over the next to innings to win the game 11-4. On day two of the tournament, Westminster faced Wartburg College in the first elimination game. The first five innings were scoreless, but Wartburg scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead. They brought in two more in the ninth to win 8-0. The Blue Jay's season came to a close with a 28-15 record, the best record since 2001.

SLIAC All-Sports Trophy

Westminster athletics walked away from the SLIAC Awards Banquet with many awards, including the top honor, the All-Sports Championship Trophy. The Blue Jays generated 95 points, beating out 11-year defending champions Webster by .5 points.

SLIAC Awards

On top of the All-Sports Trophy, the Blue Jays won the SLIAC Sportsmanship Award and the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer event award after raising the most money. Also announced at the awards banquet was senior Kasey Gatson as the 2016 SLIAC Female Scholar Athlete. Lastly, former athletic administrator Terry Logue was inducted into the SLIAC Hall of Fame!

Softball 

The Westminster College softball team had three players earn National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region Team honors for the 2016 season. Junior Erica Burney, the 2016 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Player of the Year, was placed on the NFCA All-Region First Team as the first baseman. She is now in the running for the All-America Team. Sophomore Amber Tepen, a SLIAC All-Conference Second Team recipient, was named to the NFCA All-Region Second Team as an outfielder, and junior Alyssa Johnson, a SLIAC Third Team All-Conference member, earned an at-large bid for the NFCA All-Region Third Team.

Westminster Athletes of the Week

Deion Hughes and Nick Bohlmann are this week's Westminster Athletes of the Week.
 
Deion Hughes, a senior from Jefferson City, Mo., produced four hits in the NCAA Tournament. He hit a double in day two after going 3-for-4 from the plate. He also pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five.
 
Nick Bohlmann, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., produced three hits in the NCAA Tournament with one RBI. Defensively, he recorded five putouts including one sportcenter-worthy diving catch to leave bases loaded in day two of the Tournament.
