The Westminster baseball team completed the three-game division series sweep of Fontbonne on Sunday with an 11-5 win. The Blue Jays won both games in the doubleheader with Fontbonne on Saturday. Sunday's win brings the Blue Jays to 7-4 in conference play and 12-8 in conference play. In divisional play, the Blue Jays sit at 6-3.
In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Tanner Branneky hit a two RBI double to score juniors A.C. Long and Tyler Branneky. Two more runs were added in the bottom of the third with Ty. Branneky's two-run homerun over the right field fence.
Fontbonne answered back with a two-run homerun of their own in the fourth inning. The score remained 4-2 until Fontbonne added another run in the sixth inning with a RBI double.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior Tim Chambliss hit a RBI double to bring in sophomore Connor Hager.
The Blue Jays added six more runs in the seventh inning to take the 11-3 lead. Senior Cam Backes started off the scoring with a RBI single to bring in freshman Nick Bohlmann. Backes advanced to third on freshman Adam Mundle's single. On the throw, Mundle advanced to second, but an overthrow by Fontbonne's third baseman gave Backes the chance to score. Ty. Branneky then doubled to score Mundle, and Ty. Branneky was brought home off an error by Fontbonne's second baseman. Chambliss then hit a two-run homerun over the left field fence to bring in Hager and complete the scoring for the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Fontbonne scored two runs. The game ended after Fontbonne hit three consecutive fly balls to the outfield in the ninth inning.
The Blue Jays finished the 11-5 win with 13 hits and no errors.
Ty. Branneky led the offense with four hits on four at bats with three RBI and three runs scored. Chambliss led the defense with 13 putouts, and Mundle had five assists.
Senior pitcher Jake Rule grabbed the win on the mound. He pitched the first 5.1 innings and struck out two. Sophomore Jake Lund came in as relief and pitched 2.0 innings, and junior Collin Brinker pitched the remaining 1.2 inning to close out the game.
The Blue Jays next host Blackburn College on Wednesday, April 15, for a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
