The Westminster baseball team short-gamed Kalamazoo College on day one of the 2015 spring break trip in Florida. The 11-1 seven inning victory brings the Westminster Blue Jays to 6-1 on the season.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the end of the first inning on Sunday. The Kalamazoo Hornets walked the first three batters, loading the bases for junior Tyler Branneky. He was also walked, bringing in senior Cam Backes.

The next six batters up connected with the ball and scored runners. First, freshman Chris Asher singled to left field, scoring senior Tim Chambliss. Then sophomore Nick Cessna came to the plate and hit to short stop. Asher was out at second on a fielder's choice, but junior Deion Hughes scored on the play. Sophomore Tanner Branneky then doubled to left field bringing in brother Ty. Branneky, and finally junior A.C. Long tripled to center field to bring in Cessna and Ta. Branneky.

After a pitching change for the Hornets, the Blue Jays were back in action. Freshman Nick Bohlmann singled to left field, scoring Long. It was back to the beginning of the lineup, but before Backes hit, Bohlmann advanced to second on a balk and stole third. Backes then hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Bohlmann tagged up and went home. 

In the bottom of the second, the Blue Jays scored three more runs. Cessna hit a RBI single to left field, and Long cracked a double to right field to score two. 

In the top of the fifth inning, Kalamazoo was able to cross home plate, bringing the game to 11-1. 

The Blue Jays were unable to find the plate again, but the 11-1 lead was enough to end the game in the seventh inning. 

Hughes (3-0) was credited with the win after pitching six innings, striking out eight and only allowing two hits. Asher pitched the final inning, striking out three and allowing one hit.

Long went 3-3 from the plate with a triple, a double and four RBI. Asher went 2-3 from the plate. 

The Blue Jays face Elmhurst College on Monday, March 23, for the second game of the spring break trip.
