The Westminster baseball team served Fontbonne University their first two conference losses in Saturday's 2-0 conference sweep. The 6-4 and 12-6 wins bring the Blue Jays to 6-4 in conference play and 11-8 on the season.
Game One
The Blue Jays led off game one with three runs. Freshman Adam Mundle hit a RBI single to center field to bring in the first run of the game. He rounded the bases and was brought in on senior Tim Chambliss' RBI. Junior Deion Hughes scored the final run of the inning off the Fontbonne pitcher's error.
Fontbonne added a run in the bottom of the first, and tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with two more runs brought in.
The Blue Jays rebutted with three hits and three runs in the fifth inning. Hughes brought in senior Cam Backes, and junior Tyler Branneky came to the plate and cracked a two-run homerun to left center.
Fontbonne added one run in the sixth inning, but the Blue Jays pulled out the 6-4 win.
Hughes (5-1) earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings and striking out nine. Junior Collin Brinker earned the save as he pitched the final inning.
Backes and Mundle led the offense with two hits each.
Game Two
Fontbonne scored first in game two with a RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
The Blue Jays crossed the plate in the second inning to tie up the game, but Fontbonne had a big second inning to go back up, 4-1.
A three-run homerun by Chambliss in the third inning brought the score to 4-4, but in the bottom of the third Fontbonne scored again.
A strong sixth inning for the Blue Jays gave them the 8-5 advantage. Hughes hit a RBI single to score sophomore Tanner Branneky, followed by a two RBI double by Ty. Branneky to bring in Hughes and Mundle. Sophomore Connor Hager then came up and hit a RBI single down the left field line to score Ty. Branneky.
Fontbonne added a run in the seventh inning to bring the score to 8-6.
The Blue Jays added a run in the eighth inning off a RBI by Ty. Branneky, and Backes put the final touch on the game with a three-run homerun in the ninth inning to win 12-6.
The Blue Jays finished the game with 15 hits, and Ty. Branneky led the offense with three hits.
Sophomore Seth Lehmen (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound. He pitched five innings, struck out two and did not allow an earned run.
The Blue Jays close out the division series with Fontbonne on Sunday with a nine-inning game at home starting at 1:00 p.m.
