11/26/2024 Webster Groves, MO- Westminster College opened their SLIAC conference schedule with a hard-fought 82-66 loss to Webster University on November 26th, at Grant Gym. Despite the final score, the Blue Jays showed strengths in rebounding and second-half adjustments that highlight areas for future growth.
Guard Walker Gohring led Westminster with a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-for-16 from the field, while adding six assists and five rebounds. Forward Ben Eberlin made a significant impact in the post, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass. Fellow forward Luke Abeln matched Eberlin's rebounding total, contributing nine boards and 11 points, including three three-pointers. Freshman Kolton Garner provided valuable minutes off the bench, adding 10 points and three rebounds.
Westminster excelled on the boards, outrebounding Webster 43-42, including 20 offensive rebounds that created multiple second-chance scoring opportunities. However, their offensive efforts were hindered by 20 turnovers, many of which Webster converted into points. Additionally, the Blue Jays struggled with efficiency from beyond the arc, connecting on just 28% of their three-point attempts (7-for-25) and shooting 38% overall from the field.
The Blue Jays trailed 38-25 at halftime but showed improvement in the second half, outscoring their first-half total by 16 points. This offensive surge demonstrated their ability to adjust and find opportunities, but the early deficit and turnovers proved too much to overcome.
With consistent contributions from their starters and promising performances off the bench, the Blue Jays will look to translate their efforts into their first win of the season. Westminster (0-6, 0-1 SLIAC) will focus on improving ball security and converting their rebounding advantage into points as they prepare for their next matchup. Next up, they face MUW on Thursday, December 5th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30PM.
