Blue Jays Drop Conference Opener 3-0 To The Panthers

Fulton, Mo 9/13/2022- The Westminster men's soccer team looked to hit the reset button after going 0-4 in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Looking to take the lessons learned from that in the new conference of the season as they hosted the Principia College Panthers for the first SLIAC game of the year.

The game was close for most of the first half, which both teams finding some shots but nothing really threatening to either goalkeeper. Then with five minutes to play in the first half, Westminster would be called for a yellow card that resulted in a penalty kick. The Panthers would not waste the opportunity, scoring off the PK to take a 1-0 lead right before halftime.

Westminster came out of halftime looking to score the equalizer, Niklas Olsson (Kansas City, MO / Liberty) and Tyler Christle (Huntington, IN / Huntington) both had good chances but were denied by the Principia keeper. Then a deep pass by the Panthers found the foot of one of their forwards who was one on one with the Blue Jay goalie, and hit a chip over the goalies' head to give Principia a 2-0 lead. Principia would score again after a scrum near the front of the net and the ball hit a Westminster defender's foot and would result in an own goal with ten minutes left to play. The Panthers go on to win the game 3-0. The Blue Jays fall to 0-5 on the season and are now 0-1 in the conference.

The men's soccer team will be back in action on Friday, September 16th when they hit the road to take on the Eureka College Red Devils. That game will kick off at 7 PM.
